The album is based on a story named “Silmarillion” containing the historic background to the world of The Lord of the Rings, written by J.R.R Tolkien. I read the book, then I got this album. So I advise you to do the same. If you know the story the lyrics will be more meaningful and you’ ll feel the emotions by melodies. Blind Guardian makes it perfect I think. They combine the stories that Tolkien wrote with their great music. Now let’ s talk about the album. You can get suprised at first when you look at the list of the songs. There’ re 22 – half of them are short stories- songs. The short songs make the album better and more epic.
The opening song, Into the Storm –one of my favourite songs- is an excellent song with its lyrics, good rhythms and riffs that can make you scared. It’s obvious that the instrumental part is the best part of the song.
According to me, Nightfall is the best ballad of Blind Guardian. It has a slow beginning, then the instruments start with chorus.
The Course of Feanor is a simple, speed metal song. The solos, excellent instrumental part, affective chorus, and nice drum rhythms make this anohter wonderful song. Vocals are really lyrical. Especially take notice while he say “Revenge be mine!”
Blood Tears has an excellent instrumental part. If singing was better in some parts, the song would have its place in the bests. Lyrics are about how Fingon protects his old friend, Madhros against the enemy castle, but to do this, he must cut off his friend’s hand. (“Cut off your old friends hand”). The song has a melancholy feel, but it’ s very good.
Mirror mirror is a song that lots of people’ s favourite. It’ s really a good song. You hear power metal by its solos and instrumental part. Blind Guardian plays this in most concerts and fans sing it together with the band.
Noldor is the longest song in the album. Strings and guitars are very good. Emotions are skillfully expressed in the lyrics. However, I can’ t say it’ s excellent as Mirror mirror.
Time Stands Still’ s lyrics are about the fight between Fingolfin, High King Of the Noldor and Lord Morgoth. It’ s an epic song. Although keyboard is played in lots of places, it doesn’ t make you bored. Solo is nice also.
Thorn is one the long songs in the album, too. I rarely listen it. I can only say it’ s a mediocre song.
There’ s another ballad again: The Eldar. It’ s not liked too much by most people. Some people say that it’s not Blind Guardian style. I think I am one of the little people who like this song.
When Sorrow Sang is a speed metal song and is the fastest song in the album. There’ re also the best lyrics, guitar solos in it. If you don’ t like speed metal listen to this song carefully.
And the final song, A Dark Passage is about Hurin, the best warrior who has ever come. The lyrics and melody are all good.
