Grunge

5th of April is the anniversary of the death of Kurt Cobain who was the leader of Nirvana, the multi-platinum grunge band that redefined the sound of the nineties. So I wanted to write about grunge.

Kurt Cobain defines grunge as “3 chords and a scream”. There were also some rock bands in Seattle, like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Temple Of The Dog, Alice in Chains making this style of music.

The bands in Seattle made grunge by cobining punk and rock. The lifestyle of grunge was containing wearing torn blue-jeans, leaving hairs sticky, and the naming band as a thing used in home. With all of these, teenagers started to use drugs and heroin. Heroin was very popular with music. Musicians were using opium to make more creative compositions. Teenage rockers used these to identify themselves as rockstars they admired. To commit suicide by overdose was expressed as a respected death. Suicide was used to be described as virtue. The grunge fans used to like being numb and drinking alcohols. The numbness was even described as a virtue and according to them the best songs were made while drunk.

There were passion, hate and confusion as main themes of grunge. In fact, these feelings in the songs were the reason of making grunge as a lifestyle. However the music is simple. If you listen to a grunge song you’ ll hear just “3 chords”. Even a person who’ s new to guitar playing can play a grunge song. We can say that grunge is a repetition. After for a while you just write different lyrics on similar melodies. You can’ t make a different thing. That’ s the reason that grunge can no go on longer. Kurt Cobain did the best that he could do and if he was alive he couldn’ t make better than he did. It’ s the same for the other grunge groups. They did their best, too. Hovewer, there’ re still groups making grunge music. Grunge’ s not dead, but has lost its steam.

It’s a shame such good music seems to come from pain and tragedy. Ironic really…
